Janet Murguía is the President and CEO of UnidosUS, the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, formerly known as the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). Since taking on this role in 2005, Murguía has been a leading voice on issues affecting the Latino community, including education, healthcare, immigration reform, civil rights, and economic empowerment. Her leadership has been instrumental in amplifying the Latino voice on these critical issues and enhancing the impact of UnidosUS as a vital American institution.
Murguía's career in public service began in Washington, DC, where she served as legislative counsel to former Kansas Congressman Jim Slattery. She later worked in the White House from 1994 to 2000, ultimately serving as deputy assistant to President Bill Clinton. In this capacity, she provided strategic and legislative advice on key issues and managed the legislative staff as the deputy director of legislative affairs. Her experience in the Clinton administration included a significant role as deputy campaign manager and director of constituency outreach for the Gore/Lieberman presidential campaign in 2000.
In addition to her extensive work in civil rights advocacy, Murguía has served on several boards and advisory committees, including the Independent Sector, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, and the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility. She has been recognized for her leadership and contributions to the Hispanic community, including being named one of USA Today’s Women of the Year in 2022. Throughout her career, Murguía has demonstrated a profound commitment to creating opportunities and breaking down barriers for the Latino community across the United States.
