How did serving in the military help prepare you for a job in the clean energy industry?
In the Army, you are taught the 7 Core Army Values. This has been the key to my success in my education path, career journey, and spiritual walk.
LEADERSHIP
- Loyalty
- Duty
- Respect
- Selfless service
- Honor
- Integrity
- Personal courage
What advice do you have for veterans exploring a job in the clean power industry?
Being in the clean power industry can seem a little intimidating, but don’t let that deter you from taking a chance on a new career journey. Working in renewables has been the most fulfilling career choice I have made. There is always something new to learn in this industry and it is never boring. Take the risk on something new!
What advice do you have for companies looking to hire veterans?
In my 12 years of working in a professional environment, working for companies with no veterans employed versus working with veterans employed, is a different dynamic. Companies looking for dedicated employees, ready and willing to train, and serve, will find that in majority or the veteran candidates. Veterans bring a different mindset and problem-solving skills to the table. Veterans think outside the box.
For example, I’m always looking at the environment I work in and make an assessment if it is a safe place to work if an active shooter event was to occur. I’m always assessing my surroundings everywhere I go.
If a veteran opens up about a service-connected disability that affects their mental health, be patient. A smile or laugh isn’t always a positive reflection of someone’s mental health.
